Ian L. Bailey, OD, MS, DSc, FCOptom

Ian Bailey

Ian Bailey has been a Professor of Optometry and Vision Science at University of California at Berkeley since 1976. His optometric and research training came from the University of Melbourne, The City University in London and Indiana University. He is an optometrist and a scientist who is recognized as an international authority on low vision rehabilitation.

Professor Bailey is perhaps best known for his work with Jan Lovie-Kitchin developing new design principles for visual acuity test charts (logMAR and ETDRS) and introducing the method of scoring visual acuity in terms of logMAR. Ian Bailey has made important contributions towards the development of more rational and scientific approaches to optometric low vision care, and developed many new tests and procedures related to the clinical assessment of vision. He has received many awards recognizing his contributions to vision science and to clinical low vision care. These include the Prentice Medal from the American Academy of Optometry, the Pisart Award from Lighthouse International, and an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the State University of New York.
